When Should I Cut Back My Clematis...?

I forgot to cut it back last year and it is now in full bloom, with loads of new growth. Are there any rules on when to cut back clematis? Thanks in advance.

When Should I Cut Back My Clematis...?
Depends which clematis it is. They are divided in to three groups. Group 1 are early flowering Alpinas Macropetalas and Montanas. These need little in the way of pruning. Just tidy and cut to limit size if necessary. Group 2 are early large flowered. These should be cut hard back before new growth starts in the spring. Group 3s should also be cut back in spring to a healthy pair of leaf axils....so which one do you have? Do you have a name?

EDIT....Sorry didn't read your question properly obviously. If it is in full bloom now then group 1:)
Reply:You can still cut back the woody stems with no new growth. Best to leave it this year now, though
Reply:my innuendo-o-meter has just exploded
Reply:If its a cirhosa clematis (mine is and its in full bloom now) then I do it after its finished flowering - in about a months time

I am in UK by the way.
Reply:strange question for you. hey i thought you just did politics. guess your branching out.
