I pruned our purple clematis back hard a few days ago because I thought the branches were dead and that the plant would produce new ones. Sadly in my haste to clean up the yard I hadn't noticed that their were leaves sprouting...I fear I may have done irreprable damage. Will it grow back? I don't know what variety of clemtis it is. I live in the Northeastern part of Massachusetts.
I think I killed my clematis!?
I have two Clematis vines in my front garden, and the first year they were accidently demolished (weedeater!) - they came back! And they are doing great. I don't think you will have any problem. =)
Reply:I have many clematis plants in my garden and some times I have to trim them hard and they always recover If nothing seems to be happing DONT dig it up, you will find that next year it will send out new shoots from the ground.

Reply:If it is an established clematis (been growing for a few years) then you will probably be fine unless you cut it back to the ground....then you may have seen the last of your clematis.
